Description: Saint Andrews is a town in Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada. The historic is a national historic site of Canada, bearing many characteristics of a typical 18th century British colonial settlement, including the original grid layout with its market square, and the classical architecture. It is at the southern tip of a peninsula, extending into Passamaquoddy Bay. The waterfront faces Saint Andrews Harbor and the Western Channel, which is formed by Navy Island. The harbor is at the mouth of the St. Croix River. The Algonquin is a resort hotel in the “Tudor Revival” style, and one of the iconic buildings of New Brunswick. The original Algonquin Hotel was a massive wooden “Shingle Style” building built in 1889 by the St. Andrews Land Company, established in 1883 by American Businessmen. Designed by a Boston architecture firm, it contained 80 guest rooms and by the late 19th century helped to develop summer tourism. The entire hotel, except for two wings built in 1908 and 1912, succumbed to a 1914 fire and was destroyed. It was replaced on its same footprint by the present four-story “Tudor Revival” concrete replacement with a faux half-timbered façade and red slate roof. The architects of the 1914 hotel, were Barott, Blackadder & Webster of Montreal. One of the original Algonquin’s best-known attractions is its saltwater baths with water pumped from the bay into the hotel, but some visitors found a more direct way to enjoy the salt water.
