When Dymphna was 14, she devoted herself to Christ and vowed perpetual virginity. Shortly after that, her mother died. Her father's grief over his wife's death brought upon mental illness. With hopes of filling the void in his life, he sent messengers to other lands to find another woman as beautiful as his wife. His search was in vain, for none was like the wife he had lost. The king saw that Dymphna was as beautiful as her mother had been, and evil advisors suggested that he marry his own daughter. In his madness, he made advances to Dymphna and demanded that she be his wife. Dymphna fled the court with her confessor, Fr. Gerebernus, and some servants. The group found refuge in Geel, Belgium. Her father was able to track them down and ordered his soldiers to kill Fr. Gerebernus. He ordered Dymphna to return home with him, and when she refused, he pulled his own sword and struck off her head. She was 15 years old. However, God can bring good out of every evil. The residents of Geel buried the two saints in a nearby cave. After Dymphna's terrible murder, those suffering mental or emotional illness would come to the site of her death and receive miraculous healing. In 1349, a church honoring St. Dymphna was built on the spot. The church burned down in the late 15th century and was rebuilt and consecrated in 1532. Many miracles have taken place at her shrine. St. Dymphna is called the Lily of the Éire for her purity. She is the patroness of the mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, and those who suffer neurological disorders.
