Description: Civil War era CDV St. Paul, MN man w quizzical expression Whitney's Gallery This man in this wonderful shot is unidentified, but I would love to get to know him! He looks full of himself and lots of fun. Joel Emmons Whitney (1822-1886) was is one of the first people to practice photography in the Midwest. His studio in Saint Paul was above a clothing store on the corner of 3rd and Cedar from 1851-1867. Yellowing to image. Fading to image. Light soiling to card and image. Some fading at edges. Wear to one corner. On reverse is engraved:"Whitney's Gallery,174 Third StreetSaint PaulMin." Card measures about 4 x 2.375 inches. Image measures 3.5 x 2.125 inches. My mother was a photographer who collected antique photos of all types for years. As I am settling her estate, I will be listing these photos as quickly as I am able. There are hundreds of photos to go through, and I am trying to match any information my mother may have left with individual photos. Unfortunately, Mom had dementia at the end of her life and wasn't able to tell me much about her collection. She had done a lot of research into photographers and individual pieces in her collection, and often, but not always, filed her research with the photo(s). I search for more information on the internet and in history books, but it's a slow process and it will take me a long time to complete the sorting and selling process. I am always happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases, so please check out my other listings. I will ship as soon as I receive payment.
