Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen was born on 20 September 1778 on the Lahetaguse estate on the Estonian island of Saaremaa. He joined the Marine Academy in Kronstadt in 1789, later served in Tallinn and took part as cartographer in A J von Krusenstern’s expedition to sail around the globe in 1803-06. In 1819-21 Bellingshausen headed a voyage around the world on the ships Vostok and Mirny (the latter under M Lazarev’s command). During their voyage they came close to Antarctica, explored the Pacific Ocean, where they discovered several islands in the Tuamotu Archipelago and then returned to Antarctica where they discovered Peter I Island and Alexander Island in 1821. Bellingshausen’s discoveries left Russia unimpressed - his travel account was only published ten years after the expedition discoveries and the feat was only remembered in 1946. In later life, Bellingshausen, a founding member of the Russian Geographic Society, served as Vice Admiral in Tallinn in 1830-39 and as Governor in Kronstadt. He died on 25 January 1852. The stamp features a portrait of Bellingshausen. Left of the portrait is a drawing of his flagship Vostok over a map of his Antarctic expedition; on the right is a drawing of Aurora Borealis after the expedition artist Mikhailov. The FDC features the Vostok on the background of icebergs (after expedition artist Mikhailov).
