Description: Extremely rare George VI sterling silver golf trophy, the winner's prize from the prestigious Lucifer Golfing Society for the year 1951. The trophy was won by David Berrie with the following inscription engraved to the sterling silver plaque attached to the ebonised wooden plinth: "D.S. BERRIE. WALTON HEATH" The trophy itself is a replica of the British Empire Trophy and features figural lions as handles with further lions to the frieze just below the rim. The trophy lid features a horned "Lucifer" in golfing gear with his bag of clubs laid beside him and a frieze featuring oak leaves & acorns. The inscription to the trophy bowl reads: "THE LUCIFER GOLFING SOCIETY. REPLICA OF THEIR BRITISH EMPIRE TROPHY. WINNER 1951" Included with the trophy is an original professional photograph of the actual trophy for sale probably taken around the time it was awarded in 1951. Also included is the original invoice for the trophy dated 23rd July 1951 which confirms it cost £33.12.6 (the equivalent in today's money would be approx £900). (The trophy winner, David Berrie, was travelling on the passenger ship SS Caledonia from Liverpool to Bombay and needed the invoice for customs purposes to prove the value of the trophy). Finally, also included is an article which gives the history of The Lucifer Golfing Tournament which includes an image of David Berrie's trophy with most of the information provided by David Berrie himself. Sterling Silver Trophy Cup & Cover: Weight: 510.1 gm. Height (to finial): 210 mm. Height (to rim): 145 mm. Diameter of rim: 100 mm. Diameter of base: 75 mm. Hall Mark: London 1950. Lucifer Golfing Tournament (The Empire Overseas Golfers Invitation Tournament): The tournament was sponsored by the Lucifer Golfing Society, a group of men who chose this manner of repaying the hospitality of overseas courses with which they had met during their travels throughout the Commonwealth. The Society was founded in 1921 with one winner each year receiving a sterling silver replica of the Lucifer Challenge Cup. The finals of the competition are held at Walton Heath Golf Course with 20 players reaching this stage from earlier rounds. On the evening of the final round, the Lucifer Society holds an annual dinner in London's Savoy Hotel where Royal guests are the guests of honour. After the dinner and the speeches the prizes to the winners are distributed including the main prize, which in 1951 was the trophy for sale and was presented to David Berrie. Summary: As can be seen from the photos & history (above) this is an attractive & very rare golfing trophy. Only one of these distinctive "Lucifer" trophies was awarded each year so they are rare items indeed. Good luck!
