The Santa Fe Trail was used primarily from the 1840's through the 1880's as a route of commerce between Missouri and the territory of New Mexico(n.b. Wiki). The author himself was a buffalo hunter, civil war officer and Indian scout. He was wounded in battle during the Civil War but recovered and resumed his service to the US military as a scout, he rose to the rank of Colonel. He was a close friend of Buffalo Bill Cody and was a member of the travelling show (Thrapp Pg. 704) . This book provides a brief history of the trail and the major events that occurred, including some of the authors exploits.
