The Melanie Doll 5 1/8 inch tall was first produced in 1980 by Tom Mosser. The design is believed to be copied from a German Dresden Doll. After perfecting the mold, he realized that this new creation needed a name. A contest was held by Summit Glass, the company that was to produce the dolls, asking the people who would be collecting her to name her. Shirley Brown of Poway, California won with the name of Melanie. The prize was $100 cash and her initials put in to the mold permanently. SB appears next to the trademark on the back of each doll. Shirley also received one free Melanie every month for the full issue of the doll. 24 Dolls in all were produced one a month from August 1980 until 1982. Also 2 Mother's Day Bells were made in 1981 and 1982. The mold was destroyed in August 1982.
