Description: A non-restricted, not endangered species.Scientific Name: Xiphias gladiusBiological Classification: SPECIESBelongs to: XIPHIAS******************************************************************Atlantic Swordfish Bill Section Kit K. Henry. Photos show Genuine Atlantic Swordfish Bills being hauled from the fishing vessel Destiny, New Bedford, MA, C. 1985, & some of the process creating a finished product.A sample of my finished piece, ready for artistic applications is the last photo (not included). This SAMPLE has been sanded and polished glass smooth before inking. The first photo is the smoother side showing the clear surface to be polished. The holes in the back side were drilled to let the sword-bone dry evenly, avoiding any cracks.Mahogany & Pine were selected for the end pieces, and can be glued with a quality wood glue, and clamped till dry. (or stand them vertically with a weight on top). A band saw would be useful in trimming the wood before any sanding can be done. 50 grit all the way to 2000 grit paper is used, not skipping any grades of grit in between. (50, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, 300, 400, etc., etc.) A belt sander, orbital sander, and elbow grease is what I use. yup, it's a lot of work! Skipping any steps will not make it any easier, and may not give an absolute perfect ivory glass finish. A high gloss Varnish or Polyurethane can be used to bring out the wood grain, but hand rubbing can be very satisfying too.I use a Rapidograph 0000 pen point with India ink. There are some other 'markers' that may be used, but not as fine a line would result, nor will the ink penetrate as well into the bone.Lastly, when all is completed, after inking, it can be left natural, or slightly sprayed with a quality 'fixative', such as Grumbacher, if it is to be handled, protecting skin oils from compromising the work. PLEASE SEE MY OTHER LISTINGS FOR FINISHED PRODUCTS.
