Description: Plant Description: Synandrospadix is a monotypic genus in the family Araceae. Its only species, Synandrospadix vermitoxicus, is distributed in central South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru). It has a round depressed tuber, rather deep in the soil, from which leaves and inflorescences arise during the summer. The tuber usually doesn't offset, but a few rare clones are able to split. In the case of the tubers I am listing, they are the result of an original tuber that had offset. Although the ones being offered were grown from seed, several of these tubers from seed have also provided offsets. My plants are grown in zone 5 during the summer, but can be grown in most climates that have temperatures above 75 degrees during the summer. Once the danger of frost has passed, these can be planted outdoors. Be patient, as it can take 30 to 45 days for them to break ground. During the summer it needs abundant but not frequent watering. Some filtered shade in summer is necessary to prevent sun-burning. A well drained soil gives optimum results. Seeds ripen in autumn, when all the aerial part of the plant collapses, and can be stored overwinter to be sown in mid-late spring, but can also be sown immediately and kept dryish over the winter. It is dormant in winter and during this period it must be kept rather dry. I actually pull the tubers at first frost, remove majority of the plant, and clean all of the soil off of the tubers. The tubers are stored dry in a cool basement in an open container filled with shredded paper. The bulbs are spread out on the top of the shredded paper to avoid rotting out. The Tuber Being Listed in This Auction:The tuber that is being listed in the auction is going into its sixth year. A tuber will typically produce an inflorescence at around 5 years of age. Some plants may not produce any in a given year, while other times they may produce 1 to 3 inflorescences. If you plan on producing seeds, I highly recommend having more than 1 plant. The bare root tuber shown in the pictures is the tuber up for auction. The picture containing several plants is my Vermitoxicus family from last year. Shipping:Shipping cost for this auction is $10.95 USD. All items are shipped USPS Priority Mail. Additional items won will be shipped together for an additional $2.00 per auction won. Please wait until I invoice your for the combined shipping. I only ship to the United States, no International shipping.
