Description: Mine rough tanzanite from Tanzania,Africa, that is translucent to transparent ,and green/blue/red/brown in color showing many of the properties as described below in 120 carat lots randomly scooped from material as pictured. This mine rough is just as the material comes from the mine, unheated and untreated in any way and sized at approximately 10 to 30 mm long and wide by 5 to 15 MM deep and 120 carat lots containing approximately 4 to 10 stones with grading being mixed specimen, cab, facet, carve, bead or tumble polish. Tanzanite is the blue/purple variety of the mineral zoisite which was discovered in the Mererani Hills of Northern Tanzania in 1967, near Mount Kilimanjaro. The mineral is named after Tanzania, the country in which it was discovered.Excepting stones found close to the surface in the early days of the discovery, Tanzanite is universally heat treated to produce a range of hues between bluish-violet to violetish-blue.Tanzanite is noted for its remarkably strong trichroism, appearing alternately sapphire blue, violet and burgundy depending on orientation.Tanzanite can also appear differently when viewed under alternate lighting conditions. The blues appear more evident when subjected to fluorescent light and the violet hues can be seen readily when viewed under incandescent light. Tanzanite in its rough state can be reddish brown color,a blue color,a slightly green color or a green/red/brown color and can be opaque to transparent and requires artificial heat treatment from 550 to 700 °C in a gemological oven to bring out the blue violet of the stone.Tanzanite is a rare gem mineral and is found mostly in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Since heat treatment is universal, it has no effect on price, and finished gems are assumed to be heat-treated. Tanzanite is sometimes found in other colors, such as green, although technically it would be called green zoisite rather than tanzanite. Recently the tanzanite mine area was taken over by the government and sales of rough severely limited making these specimen pieces even more rare.
