Description: For your consideration is a PRESS MOLDED BOTTLE BY TATSUZO SHIMAOKA (1911 - 2007), a former Japanese Living National Treasure. It is a tenmoku brown and cream color with bright white zogan slip impressed design patterns that are, perhaps, in the form of wind blowing through grasses. They add quite a bit of drama to the overall effect of this piece. There are several interesting small iron deposit burn-outs throughout the surface of the bottle. Shimaoka dug his own local clay during the early part of his career which often contained iron that burned out during the firing and is usually considered a positive, not a negative, as they represent the source of the clay. There are no chips or cracks. There is no box and it is signed with his later form of cypher which has a curved tail. This is a nicely proportioned piece at 6 1/2" (16.5 cm) Height x 4 1/2" (11.4 cm) Square. (Photos 10 - 12 are some other listings showing work by Shimaoka). (C - 438)
