This lithograph by Italian artist Nani Tedeschi depicts Tazio Nuvolari, the great Italian race driver of the 1930s, known as "Il Mantovano Volante" (The Flying Mantuan) or "Nivola." A legend of Ferrari motorsport, Nuvolari drove Alfa Romeos for the privateer Enzo Ferrari team on and off during the 1930s. Also depicted here is aviator and poet Gabriele d'Annunzio, who, on the occasion of Nuvolari's visit to the Vittoriale museum in 1932, gave him a small golden turtle. The turtle bore the dedication, "To the fastest man in the world, the slowest animal on Earth," and became Nuvolari's amulet. Italian artist and illustrator, Nani Tedeschi, began his professional life as a physician, and a spare-time artist. But having his work included in several national exhibitions in the late 1960s and early 1970s convinced him to hang up his stethoscope and inhabit full-time a world filled with pen, paints, and paper. Later, he would add sculpture, ceramics, and glass working to his artistic repertoire. Tedeschi has held solo exhibitions around the worldincluding in Vienna, Hamburg, New York, Tokyo, Sao Paoloand of course all over Italy. Tedeschi's fascination with Ferrari began in 1985. Ferrari e dintorni, a book of his prints, including this one, was published in 1988 by Cassa di Risparmio di Modena. This litho was produced after the book came out.
