Description: Oil on canvas laid on board, 3 1/4" by 5 3/4", 6 1/2" by 8 3/4" framed, this work is almost a miniature. The subject is typical Texas: a dirt road winding into the distance in a country landscape, trees at the right. I would be tempted to say this is a typical "bluebonnet painting", featuring the famous wildflower display that anyone who has been in Texas in the spring will recall with fondness; but the signature at lower left "GOFF" is very interesting. The well-known Texas artist LLOYD LOZES GOFF (1918-1982) would have been basically still a juvenile, in the early 1930's, when I would guess this was painted. The stiff, amateurish handling of the trees at right does not suggest a listed artist, but if we take into account a timeline, the possibility of this being by Goff is enhanced. By about 1936 Goff was already training with the likes of Frank Reaugh, and a few short years thereafter was a professional artist, painting post office murals----well launched into his art career, which eventually encompassed New Mexico, Mexico, and even Europe. Goff's paintings sell at major auctions and he is highly sought after in Texas and elsewhere. I am going to sell this as a bluebonnet work and leave open the discussion as to whether or not it is "juvenilia" by Lloyd Llozes Goff. Certainly at very least it is a genuinely old, charming little piece.
