Description: "The Anatomy of Melancholy, What it Is, with All the Kinds, Causes, Symptoms, Prognostics, and Several Cures of It." is a 2 volume, 5.5"x9" hardcover set written by Robert Burton and published in 1836 in Philadelphia by T. Wardle. Vol. 1 has 461 pages (plus xxiv), and Vol. 2 has 612. This is the first American edition, from the thirteenth English edition, corrected. It was first published in 1621, with five greatly revised and expanded reprintings during the author's lifetime. Its medical contents serve only as a starting point for Burton, as Wikipedia explains: "Although presented as a medical text, The Anatomy of Melancholy is as much a sui generis (unique) work of literature as it is a scientific or philosophical text, and Burton addresses far more than his stated subject. In fact, the Anatomy uses melancholy as the lens through which all human emotion and thought may be scrutinized, and virtually the entire contents of a 17th-century library are marshalled into service of this goal. It is encyclopedic in its range and reference." The set is in acceptable condition, bound in the original publisher's blind-decorated cloth, with gilt title and decorations to the spine. The spines are sunned, and torn at the top and bottom, Vol. I to a greater degree. The boards show rubbing, small stains and spots, frayed and bumped corners. There are ownership marks from 1837 to the front pastedowns (including a small bookplate in Vol. 2), and Vol. 2's ffep, an old price to Vol. 1's ffep and Vol. 2's half-title page. There are small pencil marks to a few other pages, and foxing to various degrees throughout. Both volumes have moisture stains/wrinkles to pages in the middle. Several pages have bent or creased corners. A large piece is torn off Vol. 2's bfep.
