Description: Some Beach Boys fans will probably find this collection -- which offers excellent sound -- a bit off-beat, as it focuses on what one might call the group's mature years, 1966 - 1972, when the group was aiming past the teenage audience that had sustained them from the beginning (but which had moved partly out of reach with the advent of the British invasion, the counter-culture, the Vietnam War etc.). Thus, there's no "California Girls," car songs, or any of the over-exposed early hits -- rather, the makers chose to pick the best of the singles and album tracks from the point where the Beach Boys began playing mostly to college audiences. "Sloop John B," "God Only Knows," "Caroline No" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" are here from PET SOUNDS, but so are "Friends," "Do It Again," "Surf's Up" and "Add Some Music To Your Day," plus "Sail On, Sailor," "Disney Girls," "I Can Hear Music," "Cool, Cool Water" etc., all from their late 1960s/early 1970s history. Thus, it's mostly the spaced-out, mature version of the band on display, the sole track from the early 1960s on hand being "Don't Worry Baby," which fits in perfectly with the later material -- and the presence of "Disney Girls" adds more than a whiff of nostalgia for the era that preceded this material, thus obliquely acknowledging and saluting it (as the song itself did at the time). Producer Timothy Jones has done an excellent job of honoring the post-teen version of the band, and those of us who came to know them in the early 1970s. CONDITION: Used. CD MINT.
