Description: I have collected editions of The Best Plays for more than 30 years. This is a very good copy of The Best Plays of 1956-1957; it was edited by Louis Kronenberger, who succeeded the legendary Burns Mantle. The best plays of that year were Separate Tables by Terence Rattigan, Long Day's Journey Into Night by Eugene O'Neill, A Very Special Baby by Robert Alan Aurther, Candide by Leonard Bernstein and Lillian Hellman and Richard Wilbur (and John Latouche and Dorothy Parker), A Clearing in the Woods by Arthur Laurents, The Waltz of the Toreadors by Jean Anouilh, The Potting Shed by Graham Greene, Visit to a Small Planet by Gore Vidal, Orpheus Descending by Tennessee Williams, and A Moon for the Misbegotten by Eugene O'Neill. If you know anything about 20th-century theater on Broadway and the US, it's interesting to think about which of these plays we still see and think about and which you've never heard of. The volume is in very good condition without the dustjacket. Note the slight damage to the surface of the spine. In addition to reading the chronicles of the season, the black-and-white photographs are great and of course there are the Al Hirschfeld caricatures.
