Description: In 1994, South Africa had completed its transition from a government that had long advocated apartheid. Ten years later it was estimated that one in eight South Africans lived with HIV and AIDS. The Book of Life, published by the United Nations Development Programme in 2004, put the spotlight on AIDS in South Africa as part of efforts to end the horror. The Book of Life was edited by Mothomang Diaho with text by Caro Williams. Its stunning black and white photographs were created by Jürgen Schadeberg. It is difficult to imagine a better choice for photographer. Schadeberg was a German-born photographer who survived the turmoil of wartime Berlin, then emigrated to South Africa in 1950. Some of his most potent and enduring images chronicled the increasing violence of apartheid and the efforts of a young Nelson Mandela to bring an end to this earlier horror. Unusual for a young white person, Schadeberg was welcomed into segregated Black communities and was able to photograph young Black talents such as Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela. Jürgen's inscription and signature appear on the title page of this book. The book itself is in excellent condition, almost like new: solid, square binding; interior appears to be flawless; gilt on spine is clear and bright; a few small scuffs on rear board, a small bump on bottom edge of rear board. The dust jacket is very good: no significant damage; some creasing and wear along top and bottom edges, mostly at top near folds; scuffing on front and back; three tiny white spots (one on front, two on back) that may have appeared during the manufacturing process. This is a handsome signed copy.
