ISBN 978-1-879535-25-1 Please note this book is new, not used. According to family folklore the Boones have been forging iron since the time of the Vikings. Don Plummer, author of the book The Boone Blacksmithing Legacy, 1991, has traced the blacksmithing line back eighteen generations from the current smiths in the family; Dan Boone VII, Tom Boone, and M. Smyth Boone. Daniel Boone the famous American hero and explorer was a farrier blacksmith in George Washington’s army. From the “Introduction”: One of the most fascinating legacies in American history is that of the Boone family that gave us that famous pioneer, Daniel Boone. This enduring family can be traced back to sometime during the Viking p riod and persists today in thousands of American individuals and countless others around the world. It can almost universally be said that they are a hardworking, honorable, creative and adventuresome family that has made many contributions to a better world. Good stuff seems to course through Boone blood. But there is some other odd stuff also mixed into the Boone blood: they have a tradition of being blacksmiths! They have been blacksmiths for centuries and centuries. In a most remarkable continuity in one Boone lineage, every descendent since recorded time has been a blacksmith. This is over three hundred years and fifteen generations. And, for all we know, it may go back well before that. And equally remarkable, this Boone blacksmithing legacy runs as strongly today as ever and bears evidence it may last yet more centuries. Some readers may be surprised that there are blacksmiths at all, let alone blacksmiths from the famous Daniel Boone family. Many think the craft is long dead. Quite the contrary, it is alive and healthy... although changed. After existing for thousands of years as one of the most important skills necessary for communal survival, it essentially died during the early decades of the 20th Century as the industrial revolution and its automobiles, electric power, machinery and mass production tolled a death knell to the individual craftsman. Blacksmiths were no longer necessary to make the things we needed. Man had found machines to make nails, hinges, chains, swords, hammers and hoes. During the 1930's and 40's there was some resurgence of the need for blacksmiths as interest in preservation of old homes and buildings gained momentum. Machines could not make the reproductions of the two and three hundred year old ironware on these buildings. Each piece was unique and had to be made and fitted by hand. A significant craft movement developed during this period. During the 1970's a greater interest in blacksmithing again grew as folks began to want something different from the stamped products of the industrial age…. Included in the contents is a chapter by Daniel L. Boone VII who describes in step-by-step detail how to forge a dragon’s head. Each step is illustrated by a photo. Plummer includes a chapter on Boone blacksmithing during the Revolutionary War, and another covering the Civil War. And there are dozens and dozens of great photos and drawings showing various members of the Boone family through the past few centuries, and some of the beautiful ironwork today.
