The Courageous Six Triple Eight: The All-Black Female Battalion of World War II

Description: The Courageous Six Triple Eight by Artika R. Tyner, Cynthia Paul When the United States entered World War II, it had to face its own contradictions at home. Opportunities opened up for Black people and women in support of the war effort. But ideas about race and gender didnt change as swiftly. Read the story of the first all-Black battalion in the Womens Army Corps--the Six Triple Eight--and its leader, Major Charity Adams. These women bravely confronted the racism and sexism they experienced. And they did it while creating a system to make sure millions of letters and packages got to soldiers fighting in Europe. From the Women Warriors of World War II graphic novel series, this inspiring story will introduce readers to heroes who were victorious in more ways than one. FORMAT Hardcover LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Author Biography Dr. Artika R. Tyner is a passionate educator, award-winning author, a civil rights attorney, a sought-after speaker, and an advocate for justice. She lives in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and is the founder of the Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute. Cynthia Paul grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee and has since moved up and down the east coast. After a long career of doodling in the margins of her homework, she decided to jump into childrens illustration and has loved it ever since. In her free time she enjoys writing, learning about history, travelling, and trying her hand at baking. Review Female heroes of World War II have their stories related in these four graphic biographies. Sophie Scholl was a young -German woman who, disillusioned with Hitler, endangered her life by campaigning against the Nazis. Army and Navy nurses bravely take care of wounded soldiers in the Philippines while enduring terrible hardships and internment by the Japanese. An Australian journalist in France takes huge risks as a spy for the French Resistance. The woman who becomes the first Black lieutenant colonel in the WACS heads a team of other Black female soldiers in sorting mail for troops in Europe while enduring racial discrimination by their white colleagues. The authors and illustrators of these graphic narratives do an excellent job of conveying suspense; readers unfamiliar with the stories about Scholl and Wake will find themselves especially eager to turn the pages. The tales of the nurses and the WACS sensitively portray the difficult circumstances the women found themselves in and how they were able to rise above their respective trials and tribulations. Tones of sepia, grays, browns, and dark green found in the frames backgrounds complement the stories of these remarkable women. VERDICT The excellent narratives combined with engaging drawings do a fine job of introducing readers to important players in a crucial point of history.
