Few performers offer better examples of these elements combined than Carson Robison. Robison was born in Kansas in 1890 and by the early 1920's was making a living as a band guitarist and singer. About that time he teamed up with Vernon Dalhart as a vocal duo making recordings and writing songs and special material. His career was greatly aided by the advent of radio. Taking advantage of the new medium and the vaudeville circuit Robison soon developed a free and easy vocal style as homespun and down to earth as that of Will Rogers. His contributions to American Music is almost staggering in scope and volume. He composed literally hundreds of songs, poems, and stories all on American themes, cowboys, the west, and home life. All this material had reverence and respect and sparkled with a humor and lightness so typical of the yankee ability of laughing at one's self regardiess of the circumstances. With the mounting fame that the radio and recording's brought Robinson, he toured successfully the U.S., England, Ireland and Scotland in the early 1930s. Carson Robison is probably best remembered today for his compositions "Carry Me Back To The Lone Pairie" and “Barnacle Bill The Sailor". This collection contains his performances of these works, but above all it reflects his versatility as a performer. One cannot help notice certain things about his performances. First of all you feel the joy and pleasure he obviously received from performing, and next his ability to communicate his feelings for the music he performed. The interplay between Robison and his group, Pearl, John, and Bill Mitchell, warm and sincere. Their respect for one another seems almost infectious to the listeners. It is true and sad that this form of homespun humor and entertainment has disoppeared from our sophisicated lifestyle but we are fortunate that these recordings (taken from radio broadcosts of the 1930's) preserve not only the art of Carson Robison, but vaudeville style which was popular for four decades of American Theatrical history. 1978 LEGEND RECORDS PRODUCED BY GEORGE HOCUTT/JOHN KNIEST MASTERED BY CECIL SPILLER ALBUM DESIGN R.N.
