As the twentieth century dawned, the Indian army became united into a single force for the first time since the British had arrived in the sub-continent. Comprised of both Indians and Gurkhas, the soldiers were mercenaries serving for prestige rather than money. This remarkable body of men was the largest volunteer army in history with not a single conscript. It took an honourable part in defeating the finest military machines of modern times – the German and Japanese armies – as well as the armies of Italy and Turkey. It was frequently at war on the North-West Frontier of India when the rest of the world was at peace and it both protected and promoted British and Indian interests in a dozen countries east of Suez. The author, who writes with authority having himself served with the Indian army for more than a decade, draws on first-hand accounts of many of the participants as he reveals a fascinating picture of the Indian army in the European trenches of the First World War and with Allenby in Palestine (the last great cavalry campaign in history); deceiving the Bolshevik Secret Service in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution; through periods of peace in India in the 1920’s and 1930’s; and through great service during the Second World War, most notably in Africa, Burma and Italy. The book concludes in 1947 with the end of British rule and the beginning of Independence ********************************************************************* THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING WITH US - WE VERY MUCH APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS.
