It is considered to be among the most exquisite and desirable of United States coins, although very few ever circulated! You see, the production of Silver Dollars was suspended in the U.S. starting in 1806 through 1835. For the 1836 mintage, then-U.S. Mint Second Engraver Christian Gobrecht (1785-1844) was tasked with creating new dies for a silver dollar coin. American silver dollars were first struck in 1794, having been authorized by an act of Congress on April 2, 1792. After the production of U.S. silver dollars was suspended, the demand for American silver dollars was met in a large degree by the Spanish 8 Reales, which were accepted as official legal tender in the United states until 1857. In 1835, Mint Director, R.M. Patterson, instructed Gobrecht to create dies based on the designs of Thomas Sulley and Titian Peale. After some experimentation, dies were created for the first issue of Gobrecht Silver Dollars. In December of 1836, the U.S. Mint struck 1,000 coins for circulation. The coins were struck with an engraving that read “C. GOBRECHT F.” In this case, the letter “F” is an abbreviation for the Latin word “Fecit,” or “made it,” and is found on the base of the rock on which Miss Liberty is seated. Gobrecht began work at the U.S. Mint in 1935 and was named the Mint’s 3rd Chief Engraver in 1840, a position he held until his death four years later. In 1836, he created his most famous work, the 1836 Flying Eagle dollar, now known as the Gobrecht dollar, which served as the basis for most of the Liberty Seated coinage that would follow for the next 55 years. By the end of his first year as the Chief Engraver, his Seated Liberty design was featured on all of the nation’s silver denominations, from half dime to silver dollar and by the early 1840s, his designs appeared on virtually all U.S. coins from half cents to eagles.
