This American edition supposedly corrects some errors and has additional material not found in the London one. It repeats what scholars now believe to be false - that Audobon was born near New Orleans, Louisiana. It is believed that his actual birthplace was on his father's plantation on the island of Saint Domingue (modern day Haiti). John James Audubon (1785-1851, b. Les Cayes, Haiti; d. New York City. Audubon is best remembered for his attempt to create a complete pictorial record of all of the birds of America. He was a self-trained artist, ornithologist and naturalist whose monumental The Birds of America with 435 life-size prints is still the standard for bird artists today. It is said that for fifty years he was the dominant wildlife artist in the United States.
