Comprehending an Account of his Studies and Numerous Works, in Chronological Order; A series of his Epistolary Correspondence, and Conversations with many Eminent Persons; and Various Original Pieces of his Composition, Never Before Published: The Whole Exhibiting a view of Literature and Literary Men in Great Britain for more than half a century during which he flourished." Featuring "Copious Notes and Biographical Illustrations by Malone." (The great literary scholar Edmond Malone was Boswell's close friend and crucial collaborator) This set was Printed by J.F. Dove, St. John's Square, Clerkenwell, for London bookseller's R. Baynes, J. Bain, W. Crawford et. al. Volume 1 features the famous Sir Joshua Reynolds half-length portrait of Johnson. Condition: 8vo. 8 3/4" x 5 1/2" rebound in half leather over marbled boards with gilt stamped titles on black leather spine labels. Volume One 439pp.- Vol. Two 448pp. - Vol. Three 426pp. (including the fold-out Facsimiles) Vol. Four 472pp. (including the Index). Wear to edges, a few chips to the paper boards, leather corners bumped rubbed and frayed, some loss to the upper and lower leather spine tips on volume 1, upper spine tip split and cracked on volume 4 and some wear and cracks to leather hinges. Adhesive run-through on the outer edges of the endpapers. Hinges are a little loose at the gutters and a bit of foxing and toning and several small stains to a few page edges. Overall, a nice early set of this four volume James Boswell classic.
