Description: "The Little Jewel: Soo Line Railroad and the locomotives that make it go" by Wallace W. Abbey. 1984 Pinion Productions. Apparent first edition, first printing (printing number line has 1 as low number). ISBN 0930855000. 224 pages with black and white photos and maps on many pages throughout the book. Hardcover with dust jacket. The author has inscribed, dated, and signed the book on the page prior to the two-page title. The page inscribed has a photo of a train number and some graffiti in the dirt near the number. The inscription is difficult to read, but appear to say: "For Ray Merrill, With much respect. Wallace W. Abbey 1/5/96". Abbey was a life-long photographer of the railroads. He worked on the railroads when younger, became an editor at Trains magazine, and later became a railroad executive and consultant. He worked with the Milwaukee Road as a PR executive and consultant through the 70s (https://www.jsonline.com/story/entertainment/arts/2018/05/09/wallace-abbey-train-railroad-photographs/576277002/ ). I was able to find a Ray Merrill, the name the book is inscribed to, in an obituary. He was head of the Law Department of the Milwaukee Road until his retirement in 1979. This could well have been the Ray Merrill that Abbey mentions with respect. Great photos of the Soo Lines throughout the book. Abbey's photos have in the past few years been subject to a book on his work and a travelling museum exhibit. Photos are of the actual book on offer. See the photos for additional insight into content and condition of this gritty black and white photo collection about the Soo Line.
