LEGEND OF THE WEST THE LOSS OF THE SULTANA “Details of America’s worst Marine tragedy, in which so many suffered and died, have largely become lost.” RIVERBOAT TO PERDITION By Maurice Kildare Friends, sadly, important Civil War History has been laying on some dealer’s dusty shelf unread and uncared for. Here, the author says: “Details of America’s worst Marine tragedy, in which so many suffered and died, have largely become lost.” Simply put, an explosion aboard the Sultana while carrying Union soldiers released from the Confederate Prison Camps at Anderson and Cahaba had caused the largest loss of life recorded. Tucked away in the word of this story is the report of an unidentified Confederate soldier taking to the waters in a dug out to several ex-Union prisoners lives. Unfortunately, the Army had to find blame on someone so they cast a net to cover a number of fishes. Tragically, following rumors and charges being thrust on every one imaginable, it was later proved that faulty boilers were to blame. Trouble was, the exoneration came much too late and several officers career were ended. Here is the story entitled: RIVERBOAT TO PERDITION By Maurice Kildare Please read this. This is an overlooked story I found in an unusual and different magazine. For this item, I am making it available with a Buy It Now opportunity so you don’t have to wait to see if it's yours. There were many a western story published – the common ones about Cowboys and Indians are listed on Ebay every day but the rarer ones about the sidewheelers and sternwheelers who plied the river of the old west are seldom found. Collectors treasure them and their price guide value rises every day. They are hard to find. I hunt them out because really the better, untold and rarer stories were published in the rest. Here’s one of ‘em. Following my retirement, I have dedicated my remaining hours to indexing the Genealogy of our western heroes. During my research, I discovered that thousands of our kinfolk lay unfound and unrecognized on some book dealer’s shelf gathering dust. Because Old Western History and Memorabilia was printed before computer indexing, I index every item I sell. This complete index will be bound and included in this offering at no additional cost. Humbly, I am trying to keep our history alive. I hope you appreciate the effort. RIVERBOAT TO PERDITION By Maurice Kildare Folks, sooner or later – Genealogists are going to realize that their family kinfolks are lying on some dealer’s dusty shelves. If I can contribute to finding one little name or photo of that long lost ancestor you have been waiting to find, its worth all the time I spend. As a tribute to the honor of our American Ancestors, Forefathers and Pioneers, my indexed listings will also include all Indian names mentioned in the story from this time on.
