Description: THE MAD FARMER POEMSby WENDELL BERRYEngravings by ABIGAIL RORER____________________________Pictorial Hardcover no dust jacket; 29 pages; Size Approx. 8 1/4 X 12 1/4.Published by Counterpoint; copyright 2008.Details: "The joke of the Mad Farmer Poems is that in a society gone insane with industrial greed & insecurity, a man exuberantly sane will appear to be 'mad.' (There is certain ambiguity here, as is inescapable perhaps in the fine arts. If, like Ed McClanahan, you have kindly suppressed any doubts about the sanity of the author, the Mad Farmer by comparison will appear to be a raving lunatic.) These poems (to return to the author's rarely challenged view of the matter) embody a vision of sanity breaking forth into a world driven crazy by dreams of wealth, power, and ease -- and so by fear. One of our most astute critics has written that 'the Mad Farmer, according to the highest precedents, is a lover of women and the other blessed creatures, and of the world's abounding and bringing forth.' Some of these poems are, so to speak, endorsed by the Mad Farmer and bear his name in their titles. These includes admirable poems by James Baker Hall and William Kloefkorn. Some that are not nominally Mad Farmer poems foretell or emulate his joyful allegiances. One or two of these have recently earned for their author the denomination of 'crank'--to which the author replies, Of course!" Author's note The book has a hardcover binding with a cloth spine; there is a farmer picture on the front cover; the spine has metallic lettering; there is a metallic signature by the author on the back cover. A fine addition for your bookshelf!Condition: The back cover is a little soiled (see picture); there are some indentations on the back cover; there are a couple of price stickers on the back cover; otherwise the book is in very good condition with a firm binding and clean pages. Note: The letter/number at the end of the title line for this listing is just an inventory code for locating the book. Free Domestic Economy Shipping! We have been sellers of antiquarian books for over 20 years, and our experience helps ensure quality descriptions of our rare and collectable books. Be assured that we want your experience with Rivendell Antiquarian Books to be enjoyable and problem free. We believe that it is a travesty to simply throw away a used book when there is little or nothing wrong with it - we believe in giving each book the chance of finding a new home. We appreciate the impact a good book can have. We know the excitement of a new page turner, or the familiar joy of an old favorite, and we find satisfaction in putting older, and often scarce books in the hands of people who have the same love for old books that we do.Customer Service:Rivendell Antiquarian Books is committed to ensuring each customer is entirely satisfied with their puchase and our service. If you have any issues or concerns please contact us and we will be more than happy to help. Our books have been inspected carefully by hand by experienced book valuers to ensure the condition description is as accurate as possible for this exact copy pictured. If you have questions about the book before or after purchasing, please feel free to contact us!Packaging:We take pride in packaging our books for safe delivery, and if you check our feedback, you will see this reflected in the comments of many pleased customers. For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.Delivery:We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
