Description: The N. O. T.& L. Story is about the Northern Ohio Traction & Light Company electric railroad. The books reflects the rise and decline of the greatest Interurban electric railway in America. Several of the railroad’s components were constructed by rival groups around the turn of the twentieth century. Occasionally they were constructed only after bitter battles over rival routes and franchises. After its consolidation in 1906, it served a string of towns and cities stretching from Cleveland on the north, through Akron, Canton, and Massillon to New Philadelphia and Urichsville on the south. It absorbed all the local streetcar lines along the way. They used the streetcar lines to enter the center of the towns. Between the towns it operated along side roads over private rights-of-way and across open farmlands. Then book N. O. T.& L. Story tells the story about the upgrades and relocations of the interurban routes during the teens (1910-1919). During the roaring twenties the railroad purchased high speed steel interurban cars to compete with the automobile. But 1929 brought the great depression and the decline of the railroad. The chronicles the abandonment and/or sale of parts of the line. Also included in the N. O. T.& L. Story are histories of five associated and connecting electric railways. Three of these were at one time part of the N. O. T.& L. (Cleveland Alliance and Mahoning Valley Railroad, Inter-city Rapid Transit and Twin Cities Traction) railroad and two were independent operations (Stark Electric and Salem city lines). You will want to add N. O. T.& L. Story to your collection if you are a history buff of area, an interurban rail fan or railroad fan. There is an addition book on the history of the electric railroads in the region. That book is Electric Railways of Northeastern Ohio CERA Bulletin 108. It is also available on this website.
