Girl (2 episodes, 1971-1973) Synopsis:Based on the best-selling anthologies of Victorian and Edwardian detective fiction, The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes features the world-famous consulting detective's fictional rivals in the fog- shrouded crime capital of London. Set in the three decades before the Great War, each story dealt with an individual and perplexing case (and a different detective). This top-flight, BAFTA-winning series attracted an incredible array of talent, including John Thaw, Derek Jacobi, Michael Sheard, Richard Beckinsale, Robert Stephens, Peter Vaughan, Roy Dotrice, Donald Pleasence, Ronald Hines, Peter Barkworth and Donald Sinden. This 8 DVD set contains the 26 high quality episodes that made up the complete series. Season 1 A Message from the Deep Sea The Missing Witness Sensation The Affair of the Avalanche Bicycle & Tyre Co. Ltd. The Duchess of Wiltshire's Diamonds The Horse of the Invisible The Case of the Mirror of Portugal Madame Sara The Case of the Dixon Torpedo The Woman in the Big Hat The Affair of the Tortoise The Assyrian rejuvenator The Ripening Rubies The Case of Laker, Absconded Season 2 The Mysterious Death on the Underground Railway Five Hundred Carats Cell 13 The Secret of the Magnifique The Absent-Minded Coterie The Sensible Action of Lieutenant Holst The Superfluous Finger Anonymous Letters The Moabite Cypher The Secret of the Foxhunter The Missing Q.C.s The Looting of the Species Room The Mystery of the Amber Beads This British TV series, shot almost entirely on videotape, dramatized short mystery fiction by authors who were contemporaries of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Many of these authors were virtually unknown to modern audiences, although all of the detectives portrayed had appeared in popular ongoing series of short stories or novels. 'Rivals' featured the only dramatizations to date of such period characters as Jacques Futrelle's 'The Thinking Machine' and W. H. Hodgson's 'Carnacki The Ghost Finder'. Production values were high, although the limitations of early '70's video technology are painfully obvious. The casts included the cream of British television's character actors, featuring a few faces that will be recognizable to American audiences.
