The Sketchbook, Washington Irving 1908

Description: This well-worn school textbook is in "acceptable" condition because of the numerous pencil scribblings in it, but these scribblings are precisely what make this book priceless as a time-capsule glimpse into adolescent culture in 1911. In the flyleaves are jokes, limericks, and complaints about school. In the text itself are written reminders ("April 8, 1910 -- my first dance"). The back endpapers include this pencilled quote from Major R.E. Wilson, CSA (1st NC Sharpshooters), along with references to the Knights of the Golden Circle: "If I ever disown, repudiate or apologize for the cause for which Lee fought and Jackson died, may the lightning of heaven rend me, may the scorn of all good men and true women be my portion. Sun, moon and stars all fall on me when I cease to love the Confederacy. Tis the cause, not the fate of the cause which is glorious." This is more artifact than book -- if you're looking for inspiration, or background, for a writing project, this might be the spark you need.
