The painting was created using Stone Shadow Craving, a traditional stone engraving technique over 1600 years in Hui-an, Quanzhou. It was engraved with black stone (also known as "Hematite"). It was from Huai’an China. Huai’an stone engraving has enjoyed a long history spanning over 1600 years and boasts various engraving techniques. Huai’an stone engraving is a traditional carving art using petous bluestone that is mainly found in Huai’an country in Quanzhou area of Fujian Province. Waterhouse painted My Sweet Rose in 1908. The Soul of the Rose is one of his most famous artworks. The style of Waterhouse paintings was the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which was devoted to the beauty of female. The classic and elegant clothing of the woman and the beauty of the nature surrounds her is stunning. The Soul of the Rose is a phrase that originates from Tennyson’s poem titled Maud from 1855. The poets of Tennyson have influenced many Waterhouse paintings. The softness of the woman in the painting is said to have been inspirited by his South-European roots (The Soul of the Rose, n.d.).
