Description: "The Spectator: A New Edition, with Biographical Notices of the Contributors. Complete In One Volume, with Portraits." H. Washbourne & Co., London, 1853. {{ Please READ ALL of this Description before making your purchase }} This unabridged 1853 edition (by Washbourne & Co., London) is a single-volume compilation of the early 18th Century British serial publication "The Spectator," published originally from March 1, 1711, to December 20, 1714, and which was both a very popular and very influential socio-political commentary in its time. The Spectator, though written anonymously, nevertheless was the product of some of England's most imminent and auspicious personages as its contributors, including Richard Steele, Joseph Addison, Alexander Pope, and John Hughes, among several others, who are all known (or surmised) after the fact to have authored the original serial editions included in this single-volume compendium. This volume is leather bound, with marbled edges and endpapers, gilt titles and ornamentation to spine and boards. 8vo. (9.5" t. x 6.5" w. x 2" thick). xxxii, 722 pp. (incl. Index). Condition is "Good." {READ} Evident edge-wear, corners bumped. Preeminent damage consists of complete separation of back cover / endpaper at hinge (see pics). Otherwise this volume is in structurally-sound, and aesthetically-respectable condition. A significant portion of the gilt ornamentation (especially to the extremities of the boards, not so much to the spine) has worn away, but even the gilt work design on the fore-edges of the boards remains evident. The spine itself is in very good condition, excepting the separation of the rear board at the hinge; small chip at head of spine. Title, ornate gilt work, and embossing are all remarkably clear and sharp. Text block is complete and very sound; all pages present, intact, & undamaged. Paper has yellowed throughout, w/ some foxing / spotting evident within, but text is complete and legible, and all plates are present and in fine condition. Even despite separation of rear board, this volume remains straight, square and incredibly sturdy, and its utility and readability as a work of historical and cultural interest, and academic reference, remains undiminished. Single bookplate inside front cover; former property of one Walter Neef. Please inspect photos carefully; message with any inquiries.
