Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons Place: New York & London In the book, the aviators tell their own heroic story of their flight across the Atlantic. The authors are Capt. Hermann Koehl, Maj. James C. Fitzmaurice, Baron Guenther Von Huenefeld. Captain Koehl (1888–1938), also styled as Köhl, was a German aviation pioneer who on April 12 and 13, 1938, flew the first transatlantic flight by a fixed-wing aircraft from east to west. The copilot was Fitzmaurice (1898-1965), born in Dublin, who served in the Royal Air Force. Baron Von Huenefeld (1892-1929), a German aviator, owned the plane, the Bremen. The Baron organized the flight and was the third member of the crew. Although the team landed short of the original destination of New York, a special act of the U.S. Congress in May 1928 awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross to the three aviation pioneers who against the prevailing winds conquered the Atlantic. The book consists of individual biographies of the "Three Bremen Flyers" and their stories of their flight in a Junkers plane between Baldonnel Airdrome in Ireland and Greenely Island in Canada.
