Description: Original Framed Watercolor 1920s Turkish Bathhouse Nude Art Deco Signed by Theodore Theo (Ted) Glass (1893-1960) Painting measures 8 7/8 inches tall by 5 3/4 inches wide (portrait orientation)Frame measures 13 3/4 inches tall by 10 5/8 inches wide by 7/8 inch deep (thick) Condition: Pre-owned. This is an original watercolor and ink pen on paper drawing by Theodore "Theo" (Ted) Glass (1893-1960). It is signed in the lower right side on the seated area above the fabric. It says Theodore Glass - 19?? Paris. I believe the date is 1924. The matte partially obscures the last number. I have the area and made a couple of black and white photos (see above) with the resolution turned up to aid the ID. The information and signature is there, it's just really faint. Glass was known for his lithography and commercial artwork as well as his watercolor and drawings. He painted in Paris starting in 1924 and returned to the US in 1930 according to AskArt. That would fit right in with this piece.It's a beautifully done, tasteful portrait of two women as they bathe themselves. There's a wonderful detail of a monkey casually eating fruit at their feet. Judging from the background of the ships, palm trees and Middle Eastern buildings, this is most likely a Turkish bathhouse. It's definitely a Middle Eastern port city. It's painted in a typical Art Deco fashion. The shading work is really nice and the details especially on the two woven fabric pieces the women are holding is stunning. The tile floor is a really nice as well, leading the eye to up to the subject matter. There's one woman who standing and staring off to the right and one woman who's seated and looking right at the viewer. For the nude subject matter, it's very tactfully and tastefully done. This painting has been in a private collection for a long time and is just now being offered for sale. When you do find Glass' work, it's more often landscapes. So this is really just a hidden gem for the right buyer. The first set of photos taken, were done in natural light; the rest in a light box to pick up more details. The natural light photos are more true to color, although the depth of the drawing didn't translate so well. The frame is gilt wood. It's double matted with a light tan fabric matte with a black matte inset. It's subtle and matches the artwork well without overwhelming it.
