Description: This hand painted antique porcelain stein features a scene from the German poem 'The Trumpeter of Sackingen,' written in 1885 by J. Viktor von Scheffel. The poem tells a star-crossed love story between a lowly trumpeter and the baron's daughter. The front panel on this stein depicts the trumpeter on the bank of the Rhine River, after his proposal has been rejected by the girl's father. He looks back up to the castle, where his love resides and mournfully plays a farewell song. Text on the sides reads "Behüt dich Gott es wär so schon gewesen" which translates as: "May God watch over you - it could have been so beautiful". Looking inside, the lithophane shows an older woman, a younger woman and a Tyrolean man, who is sitting on a bench. This lithophane (a picture that is revealed on the inside bottom, as you finish your drink) has great detail; pots and pans are seen hanging to the left of the threesome, while nearby curtains flap in the breeze. There are some hairline cracks on the bottom--just want you to be aware. It is more visible from the outside than it is from the inside, while viewing the lithophane. Porcelain stein is 8 1/2 inches tall, has a 4 inch base and is circa 1900. It is in good condition, especially considering its 100+ year age. The 1/2 liter capacity mark is just to the left, when facing the handle. There is visible paint wear at the base and on the bands. Stein has been priced accordingly. Please see pictures. Pewter lid is in very good condition; opens and closes easily and securely. It also features a well-executed stag on the thumb rest. Stein is made in Germany and is from the estate of a long-time stein collector. Great piece to add to your personal collection!PES50.4
