Description: This listing is for an unusual box made of a dried orange peel made by by Elena & Alexander and originally sold at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. This was purchased by a friend's mom in New York in the 1980s. The orange box is in excellent condition. This unique box measures 2 5/8" across and 1 1/4" tall. It comes with the original Museum of Modern Art gift box and tissue paper. Please see the photos for more detail. According to the round paper insert in the box, this was made in California. It also says "The orange has long been a symbol of good luck and prosperity through the ages. The art of transforming this fruit in a box has been developed to create: THE NATURAL ORANGE BOX - An orange was handcrafted to a unique box with beauty and fragrance lasting for years to come." As this is from the 1980s, it no longer has a fragrance. I could only find one reference to this online which said: "This box is actually made from an orange, or at least the peel of an orange, that has been squeezed thin, shaped, dried out and ‘cured’. Originally an ancient Mediterranean art, the technique was revived in the 1980s by a husband and wife team based in California. Using orange peel, grapefruit and lime peel, the skins are soaked for several hours in water, then turned inside out and placed over a mould. They then spend several days drying in the sun, and are then removed from the mould and polished. The boxes will apparently last for decades, although the natural scent of the fruit will only last 3 or 4 years.
