Description: Austria introduced its first bimetallic circulating issue on 23 October, 1996 – a 50 schilling coin with a gold-colored outer ring of copper/aluminum/nickel alloy and a copper/nickel center with a nickel core. Paul Berger, then master of the Austrian mint explained, “Since the higher denominated coins in the Euro currency will be bimetallic, we seized this opportunity [to accustom] the Austrian public to this new look in coins.” Heinrich I, Margrave of Austria from 994 to 1018, is featured as a knight, and the reverse displays the shields of the nine Länders of Austria. The coin celebrates Austria's millennial. (996 is the date of the first appearance of the word Ostarrichi on a Bavarian document by Otto III, Holy Roman Emperor from 996 to 1002. It referred to a small area in eastern Bavaria which belonged to the Babenberg dynasty, Leopold I and his son Heinrich I.) The engraver of the obverse is Herbert Wähner, reverse Andreas Zanaschka.
