Description: In addition to being rare in the U.S., the Veinte Cohol banana is one of the fastest growing and producing banana varieties in the world. This means that it is possible to grow your own edible bananas even in areas with very cold winters and shortened growing seasons. Whereas most banana plants will realistically take over a year to ripen fruit (outside of the tropics where production continues year round), the Veinte Cohol grows and ripens its fruit quickly enough that it can produce a bunch of bananas before cold weather sets in. And while its vegetative growth is quite quick, it is also what is called a “short cycle” banana - meaning that the time in between flowering and ripe fruit is greatly compressed. Whereas most banana plants take between 4 and 6 months after flowering before the fruit are ripe, Veinte Cohols can accomplish this in less than two months. This combines to make the Veinte Cohol perhaps the fastest fruiting banana anywhere. I have had a Veinte Cohol planted as a foot tall pup in April produce fruit in December - it really does grow that quickly! Another huge benefit of this variety is its small stature. It peaks at no more than 6 feet tall at the top of the pseudostem, meaning that it is one of the most dwarf banana types capable of consistent production. And while this can be very important for those in warmer areas who might want to use it as a landscape plant or just don’t have much room, it also means that it is one of the few banana plants that you can reasonably expect to be able to get fruit from while growing it in a pot. This fact, combined with its rate of growth, makes the Veinte Cohol banana perhaps the single best choice for growers in areas far outside the tropics or even subtropics. It should be said that the plant is actually relatively cold sensitive, even amongst banana varieties. In my experience this plant will lose all its leaves to cold when temps drop below the mid-30s Fahrenheit. I have, however, had Veinte Cohol stalks weather temperatures into the upper 20s and then resume growing the following spring. I really don’t believe that the fact of its cold sensitivity diminishes this plant’s strongsuit for places with compressed growing seasons, because it can simply do something that other edible bananas can not in ripening fruit so quickly. As far as the looks of the plant, I believe they are especially pretty compared to most other banana plants. The short plants have leaves of very light green and pseudostems streaked with amazing blacks and reds. Unique among bananas that I grow, the leaf petiole margins have an amazing purple color. Even the inflorescence is special, too - it is predominantly a deep purple that fades stunningly to light green. Note that this variety is naturally quite small, meaning that the pups are consequentially smaller than those of other varieties that I sell. Don’t be alarmed if what you receive is quite small, they grow very quickly once separated from the mother plant! The fruit are also incredibly unique. They are small and round, often only around 2” in length. The flavor is vibrant and super different from most bananas. They have a tartness that is completely different from any other banana I have tried. Most “acid” bananas that you’ll come across (Brazilian, SH3640, Mysore, Patupi, etc.) have a bit of acidity that acts as a compliment to their sweetness and other flavors. With Veinte Cohol, the acidity is the primary flavor component, which is incredibly interesting. They have a green apple-like tartness and a bit of apple flavor, with very little sweetness unless eaten quite overripe. Their texture is extremely soft and airy. You hardly meet any resistance when you bite into it. Despite this, there is also a juiciness that is completely absent in most bananas. This all combines to make a banana that really melts in your mouth. Overall I really like them. They are just so different from any other banana I have tried that their flavor alone makes Veinte Cohol worth growing even if you live in a place that doesn’t require its speedy growth to get edible fruit. A note on buying banana plants: banana plants sold online and in nurseries are notorious for being either off-type mutations or entirely different varieties from what they're supposed to be. I know from experience! (For example: If you buy a plant labeled "Blue Java" or "Ice Cream" from anyone other than a backyard grower who has personally fruited it, there is a 99% chance you will end up with a tissue cultured Namwah.) Sellers who are either unscrupulous or simply uninformed get away with this because it often takes over a year for the tiny plants they sell to bear fruit. I will never sell you a banana pup off of a plant that I haven't personally fruited, so there are no worries about getting an unidentified type! You are buying a well-rooted pup off of one of my mature mats. Keep in mind that most online banana sellers sell frail plants with tiny root systems. Though it is certainly cheaper to ship them this way, it is exactly the opposite of what is necessary for good growth of the plant! It is much better to get a cut-back pup with a large chunk of corm and well-developed root system like the ones I sell. They might not look as nice initially but will rapidly outgrow a tissue culture plant due to their already developed root network. This means you can get fruit many months or even a year faster than if you buy a small tissue cultured plant! Note:-The pup will be freshly separated from the mother plant at the time of ordering.-The plant will be cut back for shipping. Don't worry! They will grow back very quickly!-I provide free shipping to the lower 48 US states. I cannot send bananas to Hawaii.-Local pickup/meetup is always welcome if you're in Central Florida!-If you'd like, I can send instructions for planting/care after purchase.-Please keep in mind that I cannot be responsible for damage due to cold during the shipping process. Please check to make sure that areas near your location are free from freezing weather at the time of purchase!
