VERY RARE Antique 1890s Set of 4 William Winter Gray Days/Shadows of Stage ++

Description: VERY RARE 1st Edition Set of 4 by William Winter All four have decorated cloth board covers with the prettiest gold gilt design on the fronts. Being over one hundred years old these show some age. But surprisingly the inside pages are in great condition with no tears or loose pages. Gilt on top of the pages is in very good condition. The covers as you can see are dirty, worn, and stained etc. I didn't try cleaning at all. Some pencil marks in the upper corner of front pages. Illustrations all have a tissue overlay. 5 1/2" x 4". I'm not an antique book expert at all so ask questions. These are sold as is. William Winter was a noted drama critic and author in the latter part of the 19th century. The four volume set consists of: Shadows of the Stage First Series, Shadows of the Stage Second Series, Shakespeare's England and Gray Days and Gold. Macmillan & Co. appears to be the publisher although it's hard to tell for sure. 1. "Shadows of the Stage" First Series Copyright: 1892 Pages: 387 Description: The author, William Winter, has put together in this little volume, twenty-eight essays on the stage and those who have trodden it. He first discusses the question: Was the stage of the past better than the stage of the present? The others deal with great performers and performances that the writer has seen. Readers will find that some of their most pleasant recollections of the drama in England and the United States are revived by these pages. 2. "Shadows of the Stage" Second SeriesCopyright: 1893Pages: 367 From a review: William Winter was a long-time 19th century New York theatre critic and poet; he was great friends of all the great actors and actresses of that day, and corresponded with them as well. His descriptions of their playing style bring back the actor to life and help the layman to visualize their performances and judge their popularity. While his writing is flowery as suits the style of the day, Winter is clearly in love with the theatre of his time and the actors of his day. The reprint of his book is a great find for theatre historians and performance historians. 3. "Shakespeare's England"Copyright: 1886Pages: 271 Description: The author's tour of England in which he describes the beauty of its landscape, famous homes, churches, streets, shops, etc. 4. "Gray Days and Gold" Copyright: 1892Pages: 353 Description: A companion to Shakespeare's England, relates to the gray days of an American wanderer in the British islands, and to the gold of thought and fancy that can be found there. These will ship in a box to protect them. Will also be insured.
