Description: In 1851, the Boston-built Flying Cloud, a 3-masted clipper ship, sailed from New York to San Francisco in an astonishing 89 days, 21 hours. Almost unheard of for a woman, Eleanor Creesy served as the ship's navigator with her husband Josiah as ship's captain. She brought Flying Cloud safely around Cape Horn at the height of a winter blizzard, storms, shoals, and found her way through calms to make the swift passage possible. Her profound knowledge and intuitive decisions enabled her husband to concentrate on sailing the ship and having his 60 men crew ready at all times, having up just the right amount of canvas to squeeze out every last bit of a knot for Flying Cloud to literally fly down south in the race around the Horn. Three years later, the same vessel set a new record—89 days, 8 hours—and that record was not broken until 138 years later in 1989 by a 60 foot modern racing sloop! This is a vintage 1973 kit released by Addar Products in Bayside, New York. The box has wearing on edges with some stains and fading of color as well as a few remnants of old tape. Box is open and all parts appear to be complete but cannot be certain. Selling as-is. See photos. Items in photos are what buyer will receive.
