Description: This Bronze statue, a replica of a semi-nude woman reclining on a ornately carved couch is titled "Venus Victrix". The original was created in white marble by the Master Sculptor, Antonio Canova (1757-1822). It is of Maria Paolina Bonaparte Borghese. The paper taped to the bottom of this statue tells part of the story and reads "When her brother, Napolean was immortalized by Canova, Paolina would not be outdone! Being the most powerful woman of her time, she commanded the Master Sculptor to create this famous portrait of her." The original resides in the Borghese Gallery in Roma along with the plaster cast of her entire body - which was considered scandalous in 1808. Please see photos. Measurements: 18 1/2" high x 8 1/2" wide. Condition: Some small white marks on the sculpture can be cleaned. There is minor irregularity of the bronze coloring. Please see photos.
