Description: Up for sale is this exceptionally rare and beautiful vintage or antique carved Easter Island Miao kavakava male figural art sculpture statue from Rapa Nui, Polynesia. This is a stunning example and representation of what the ancient Rapa Nui civilization carved, small wooden figures that have beguiled collectors and baffled experts worldwide. Moai kavakava, meaning ‘image with ribs’, refers to the emaciated figure’s over-developed rib cage. It was carved from the Toromiro tree, which was indigenous to the island before extreme deforestation in the 1800s destabilized the ecosystem. It’s a very hard wood, and experts say was specifically selected because it could easily last for centuries. Another key feature of the moai kavakava is the hypnotic expression of the eyes, making the piece ‘unusually powerful’. Around the neck and elongated earlobes on this piece, is an area where string could be strung allowing the figure to be worn around the necks of men during ritual feasts. Like similar traditions in other Polynesian societies, these figures most likely represented fertility. The spike above the head balances the pointed male genitalia below and further reinforces the idea of fertility. This figure is highly stylized with its curved thin rib cage, hands almost in a prayer-like position as he sits on a wooden block with knees bent. Very detailed throughout and his feet and hands are nicely carved, as well. This sculpture is one of the most unique and detailed I’ve seen - even the back of the rib cage is quite extraordinarily carved! Measures 10.4” inches tall, 2.6” inches long and 2.2 inches wide (26.4 cm, 6.6 cm, 5.6 cm). In excellent condition with no losses. Comes from an estate collection. Would make a fantastic display piece, fine addition to a collection, or a great gift!
