Description: The Chase and Sanborn's brand name was created by coffee merchant James Sanborn and tea buyer Caleb Chase. They went national in 1908, long before other popular tea brands, but did not invent vacuum packaging. C&S was the first coffee company to pack and ship roasted coffee in a sealed tins. Tea didn't need to be vacuum packed, but these tins sealed tight with screw lids to preserve the flavor nonetheless. The boys sold out to the Standard Brands conglomerate in 1929. In turn Standard Brands had about 40% of the national coffee and tea market going into the early 1950s, but failed to move its advertising from radio to television and was purchased by the Sara Lee company in 1999 and an Italian company in 2006. These two square tin and cardboard cans most likely date to the 1920s or 1930s, after C&B's earliest round tins. The larger can measures 4.25 (10 cm) x 3.5 (8 cm) x 3.5 (8 cm) inches and the second can is 3.75 (8 cm) x 2.5 (6 cm) x 2.5 (6 cm) inches. They're both in very good condition with an excellent patina. The red on one side of the smaller can probably faded with time (red tends to do that sooner than other colors). Perfect for the committed or casual tea can collector given that Chase and Sanborn (minus the apostrophe S) is still sold today. The pair create a nice set, maybe as pen, candle, or flower holders or as part of a larger coffee and tea set. Or they could be for those something specials you want to keep from the rest of the world. Check out our other advertising collectibles at www.ebay.com/str/agitpropshop. EA731002
