The Memorial is located near the site where Confederate General Robert E. Lee observed Union forces repulse Pickett's Charge - a pivotal development in the battle that resulted in the Union victory at Gettysburg and, ultimately, in the wider Civil War. This Old English Staffordshire Ware ashtray was made by the Adams Pottery Company that originated in 1657 in Staffordshire, England. It was imported by Jonroth England, a major importer of Staffordshire pottery, for the Lee Museum in Gettysburg that is located in the small stone house on Seminary Ridge that served as Lee's battlefield headquarters. The Virginia State Memorial depicted on the ashtray includes a statue of Lee amount his horse Traveler, his hat in hand, as he watches events on the battlefield unfold.
