Description: Circo di Caracalla Circus of Caracalla, Giovanni Piranesi Hand Colored & Published by Artistic Pictures Publishing Co. Inc. New York City Description Giovanni Piranesi was an 18th century Italian classical archaeologist, architect, and artist, famous for his detailed etchings of ancient Roman ruins. This landscape depicts the ancient ruins of the Circus of Caracalla in Rome, or, the Circus of Maxentius as it is known today. This is a hand colored lithograph, printed on high quality, heavy white paper with a substantial 2.5 inch wide border. There is embossing around the image plate, just as the original etching would have had. Published by Artistic Pictures Publishing Co. of New York in the 1940s, this piece is one of set of three beautifully hand colored Piranesi lithographs I have on offer. AGE: 1940s CONDITION: Excellent PAPER SIZE: 10" x 12.5" IMAGE SIZE: 4.5" x 7.5" This is an authentic lithographic print dating from the 1940s, not a recent reproduction, and not a book plate. This print has never been been hung or displayed, and has been stored flat in its original condition since the day of its printing, almost 80 years ago. To find a piece in this condition is rare, a true gem. Please see my other auctions for the rest of this set, pictured in the last few photos, and keep an eye out for future art auctions, ranging from the 1800s to the mid-1900s. Provenance This piece hails from a collection of vintage artwork that I acquired from a print dealer in the late 1990s. Long retired by the time I met him, he still had a vast collection of lithographs and etchings from the 1930s and 1940s, all of which he had purchased directly from the publisher during that time period. Most still remained in their original paper packaging - untouched! By the time I came into his collection, it had been stored flat and sealed for almost 50 years. I had my own eBay art business for a time before moving on to other things, and once again these pieces were placed in storage for another 20+ years. I am now downsizing and looking to liquidate my remaining collection. This is a rare opportunity to own an authentic piece of history that has truly withstood the test of time. SATISFACTION GUARANTEED I want you to love your artwork as much as I loved my own journey in bringing it to you. These pieces deserve to be seen and appreciated. If you are not 100% satisfied for any reason, please reach out to me immediately and I will make it right. Customer service is my highest priority.
