Description: Here we have a fantastic ice axe coming out of the famous workshop and forge of Alf Bend in the village of Grindelwald in the Swiss Alps. This treasure, dating from the 1910's, is in a very fine vintage state, with a fantastic silky smooth finish to the ash handle and wonderfully smooth sculpted and forged steel components, both have the most pleasing patina telling the tales of its age. Stamped into the head on one side is ALF BEND GRINDELWALD, and on the other side of the head is the name L.W. Collet engraved. This being the name of the Alpinist and original owner of the ice axe, Proffessor Leon W. Collet the Geology Professor of the University of Zurich, and author of "The Structure of the Alps", amongst other work. Of further note; this ice axe was made in the same small workshop, Alf Bend of Grindelwald, Switzerland, that also made the ice axes that Andreas Heckmair used as he lead the team of the first successful accent of the Eiger, (1938), as well as ice axes used by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary's for their successful climb to the summit of Everest, (1953). Condition report: There is a small chip missing from the steel in the corner of the adze edge of the axe, as well as a small split in the ash on the bottom end coming out of the ferrel and spike. 37" long x 12" x 2.5"
