Description: A hand-loomed/embroidered silk and cotton blanket, shawl/mantle or wall hanging (Approx. 76 X 25 inches), also known as Chok, from Northern Laos. Chok weaving is a technique where two or more different coloured threads are inserted, by hand, between each row of warp thread, so it’s similar to embroidery or carpet weaving. I purchased this and other hangings in the late 1980s outside of Luang Prabang in a weaving village named Ban Phanom, directly from the families. The warp/weft is red silk on one end with pink, blue, white, gold, and purple embroidery representing elements from nature in geometric form - the rest of the textile is cotton on cotton. Done on a handloom, this piece is not completely square and also contains purposeful "errors" in the weaving to demonstrate that the weaver does not presume to pefection in his/her work (good Buddhist humility). The silk end has faded some with washing and stained the bottom edge of the cotton area. There is also an small area of knotted repair along one long edge. Pictures progress across both sides of the textile. This is not one of the quick machine-made knock-offs of the last 25 years sold for the tourist trade - it was made by and for the family. Age is likely between 60 and 90 years.
