Description: In 1847, Justus von Liebig developed a concentrated beef extract in hopes of providing a cheap and nutritious meat substitute, Extractum carnis Liebig, for those unable to afford the real thing. His method was to trim the fat from the meat, break the meat into small particles, boil it with water to form a liquid of 6-8% solids, and then stir it over low heat, until it was reduced to a paste of 80% solids. However, in Europe meat was too expensive profitability to supply the necessary raw materials to create the extract. In 1865 he partnered with others to form Liebig to create and market the Bouillon in Europe and eventually the United States. As Victorian Trade Cards were the rage, Liebig started to publish sets of Trade Cards of their own, usually in sets of 6. These cards come from all over Europe and are highly collectible. They often depict moments in history, literature or the arts. This is a full set. We do also have many of the individual cards for purchase at our store, please check out the link below.
