The bird has an opening to place the folded napkin. The placemat measures approx. 12" x 18 3/4" and the napkin 14" square. Purchased in Hong Kong in the early 70's and has been in storage for many many years. There are no holes, stains or defects that I see. I have hand washed, drip dried and pressed it. (The set includes one placemat and one napkin.) Always happy to combine shipping whenever possible.
