Description: Though unsigned, I'm certain that this piece was created by Richard Bergquist. This Santo is St. Francis or San Francisco de Asis. According to the back, "San Francisco de Asis, founder of the Friars Minor (The Franciscans) is so popular you even see him in the gardens of just about any denomination! St. Francis is popular with all, especially for the kindness to animals associated with him. This originated from the custom during the 1200's of feeding the animals in the barn and the wild birds a little extra food on Christmas Eve. St. Francis encouraged this, even suggesting that extra sheaves of wheat be left out for "sister lark". St. Francis was also responsible for the popularity of the Christian Creche, especially the use of the cow and burro. St. Francis today is patron of ecology, human goodness, Catholic actions, small animals and those named in his honour. Richard Bergquist is from San Simon, Arizona and is well known for this unique artwork, each one individually made and one of a kind. This particular Santo features St. Francis with doves and a duck around his feet with a jug of bird seek. It measures approximately 12" tall and 3.5" wide.
